The tool uses the HTML5 Canvas clipping API to mask the image with a rounded rectangle shape. The corners outside the rounded area become transparent (or filled with your chosen background color).
PNG supports transparency, which is needed to show the rounded corners cleanly. JPEG doesn't support transparency, so the rounded areas would appear as white or black.
The radius is a percentage of half the shortest dimension. At 50%, the image becomes a circle (or ellipse). At 0%, the corners are perfectly square.
