What makes this colorizer different

Your detail is never repainted

Most colorizers hand back whatever the model drew. We take only its colour and rebuild the frame on your own brightness channel. Across our 8 test photos the mean brightness difference between input and output was 0.08 L*, which is rounding noise.

The warm cast is dialled out

DDColor tends to run warm. On a test photo with a known-white dinner plate its colour error was 29.3 at full strength and 20.7 at 70%. We ship 80%, which clears most of the wash while the photo still reads as a colour photo.

No account, no credits, no watermark, and no daily counter. The only limit is an automatic per-IP cap that exists to stop bots, and normal use never reaches it.

How we picked the model

On 26 July 2026 we ran five colorization engines over the same eight photos on Replicate: forty predictions, $1.27 of measured spend. Four of the eight had a real colour original held back, so the colour error could be scored instead of argued about. Here is what came back.

Read the colour-error column carefully. It rewards greyness, so an engine that barely adds colour scores well on it. That is why it is printed next to the brightness column rather than on its own.

My take in one sentence

DDColor is not the prettiest engine on every photo, but it is the only one that is cheap enough to give away, fast enough to feel instant, and structurally honest about leaving your pixels alone, and its one real flaw is a warm cast we can cancel ourselves.

The honest caveat: in a blind test on tightly cropped faces and skies, DDColor was picked best on only 1 of the 8 photos. Topaz won 3 and DeOldify 2. That test crops away the strong global colour DDColor is good at and zooms in on the warm cast it is bad at. We still shipped DDColor, because Topaz costs 364 times more per image ($0.08 against $0.00022) and takes about 195 times more GPU time (19.5s against 0.10s), which is not viable on a free tool. One judge, eight photos, so treat it as a signal rather than a study.

Where it struggles

    Colours are a plausible guess, not a recovery. Grass, sky, skin, and denim are reliable because the model has seen millions of them. A specific dress, a car's paint, or a regimental uniform is invention, and no colorizer can know what was never recorded on the film.

    Warm surfaces. Even at 80% strength a white tablecloth or a pale wall can pick up a faint warm tint. In our ground-truth test the food scene stayed the hardest fixture at every setting.

    Tight face crops. Judged at 1:1 on faces alone, other engines looked better. Judged as whole photographs, this one held up.

  • 4

    Photos that already have colour. This is built for greyscale input. Feed it a sepia print and the model largely neutralises the tone and re-predicts from scratch, which is not what you probably wanted.

    Damage. Colorizing does not repair scratches, tears, or fading. Clean the photo first, then colorize.

What actually happens to your photo

Your image is resized so its longest side is 1024 pixels, then sent over HTTPS to our servers and on to Replicate, which runs the DDColor model. The 1024 cap is for speed: the same model takes 0.11s of GPU time at 1024 pixels and 33.9s at 3072. The coloured result comes back to us, we convert both your original and the model's output into CIELAB, keep your L* channel exactly as it was, scale the model's a* and b* channels to 80%, convert back, and send you a PNG. Your photo is deleted automatically within 7 days, is never sold or shared, and is never used to train models. No account is required.

The model is reliable on things it has seen millions of examples of, such as skin, foliage, sky, wood, and denim. It is guessing on a specific dress, a car's paintwork, or a uniform. Treat the result as a good-faith interpretation, not a restoration of fact.

No, and that is the point of the second half of our pipeline. We keep your photo's brightness channel exactly as you uploaded it and lay only the predicted colour over it. Measured across the test set, the mean brightness difference between input and output was 0.08 L*, which is the rounding error of writing the file.

Because we damp it on purpose. The model runs warm: on a test photo with a known-white dinner plate its colour error against the real original was 29.3 at full strength, 24.7 at 85%, and 20.7 at 70%. We ship 80%, which is where the orange wash is gone but the photo still clearly reads as colour rather than a tinted grey.
