What is an image overlay?
An image overlay places one image on top of another. The first image is the base, and the second image sits above it as the overlay. You can move it, resize it and change its transparency before downloading the result.
This is different from merging. Merging places images beside each other, while overlaying composites one image over another so they share the same pixels. If you want the photos side by side, use Horizontal Image Merge, Vertical Image Merge or Combine Photos Online instead.
How to overlay two images
- Upload the base image. Drag an image into the base area, or click to select one.
- Add the overlay image. Upload a second JPG, PNG or WebP image.
- Adjust the composition. Set the opacity, choose a blend mode and drag the overlay into position.
- Resize the overlay. Drag its bottom-right corner to change its size.
- Download the result. Select Download Result to save the composite as a PNG.
The canvas uses the base image's dimensions. If the base image is larger than your browser can draw, the tool scales the output down and tells you the final size.
Overlay one image on another with blend modes
You can choose from these 8 blend modes:

My take: start with Normal when you want a straightforward layer, then try Multiply, Screen or Difference when you want the two images to interact more visibly.
Overlay images with transparency
Transparent PNG overlays work with this tool. The transparent areas of the overlay show the base image underneath, which is what you want for a logo, a watermark or a texture over a photo.
You can also lower the overlay opacity for a see-through effect. The result is saved as a PNG, which keeps any transparency in the finished file.
