remove.bg is part of Canva, and its FAQ says the standalone website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET. Background removal moves to Canva and API access to Leonardo.Ai. Enterprise API contracts are not affected.

  • The self-service API stops accepting requests on 1 December 2026.
  • The Photoshop plugin, the desktop app and the other integrations and plugins are discontinued on the same day.
  • Unused pay-as-you-go credits expire on 1 December 2026.
  • Annual subscriptions end then with a pro-rata refund for unused time. Monthly subscriptions end then too, and any final renewal on or after 1 November is free.
  • Account data, invoices and the credit usage report are inaccessible after the cutoff, so export them from the Account page before then.
  • remove.bg recommends Canva for single images and bulk, Leonardo.Ai for automated volume, and Affinity for editing workflows. Its FAQ says Affinity's background removal needs a Canva Pro subscription.

remove.bg is a strong tool. Here is what it genuinely does better than MergeImages — if you need any of these, it may be the right pick.

Until 1 December 2026, a mature, well-documented public API with official integrations and plugins (Photoshop, Zapier and more). After that date remove.bg says the same technology is offered through Leonardo.Ai's API, with a migration guide. MergeImages has no API at all.

Bulk and batch processing. remove.bg handled large volumes through its apps and API, and its FAQ names Canva's bulk background removal as the replacement for that and for the desktop app. MergeImages processes one image at a time and has no bulk upload for this tool.

Can I remove backgrounds in bulk on MergeImages?
Not with this tool. The background remover takes one image at a time, and the bulk tools on this site cover resizing, compressing, converting, cropping, rotating and grayscale, not background removal. remove.bg's FAQ says Canva offers bulk background removal, which is its suggested replacement for batch work and for the desktop app.
Is Canva's background remover free?
remove.bg says Canva's Background Remover is the official replacement, uses the same technology, and removes the background from an image directly within a Canva design at canva.com. What it costs, and which Canva plan it sits on, is set by Canva's own pricing, so check the current plans there before you move a workflow across. remove.bg's FAQ does say the Affinity version of the feature needs a Canva Pro subscription.
Is the cutout quality the same?
Both use AI segmentation and produce clean cutouts on most photos. Results vary image to image, and fine hair or fur is hard for any tool. We will not claim MergeImages is sharper than remove.bg; the honest difference is price, access and continuity (free, full resolution, no login, not closing), not a quality guarantee.
