Nigeria Passport Photo -- NIS Requirements Explained

NIN vs Passport Photo -- Know the Difference

Your National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment at NIMC (National Identity Management Commission) involves a photo capture at the NIMC center -- you do not bring your own. That NIN photo is stored in NIMC's database and printed on your national ID slip. It has nothing to do with your passport photo. You cannot download your NIN photo and use it for your passport application, and even if you could, the specifications differ: NIN enrollment captures are taken against a variable background depending on the center, while NIS requires strict white.

Taking Your Nigerian Passport Photo at Home

• Photo studios near NIS offices -- Every NIS state command and zonal office (Ikoyi in Lagos, Apo in Abuja, Alausa in Ikeja, GRA in Port Harcourt) has multiple photo studios within a few minutes' walk. Studio operators near NIS offices deal with passport photos daily and know the current specs. Expect to pay NGN 1,000-3,000 depending on the city and studio quality.
• Ikoyi Passport Office vicinity (Lagos) -- The passport office on Awolowo Road has the highest volume in the country. Studios along Awolowo Road and Falomo charge NGN 2,000-3,000 and generally produce compliant results because they see the highest rejection feedback rate.
• Abuja NIS Headquarters area -- Studios around the NIS headquarters and the Apo office cater to applicants. Pricing is similar to Lagos.

2. Photo uploaded in wrong format or too low resolution -- The portal requires JPEG. PNG, HEIC, and other formats are not accepted. Resolution below 600x600 pixels triggers automatic rejection.
3. Shadows on the face or background -- Single-bulb overhead lighting is the usual cause. The NIS screening system is specifically tuned to detect under-eye and under-nose shadows.
4. Glasses worn -- Even clear prescription glasses are flagged. Remove them for the photo.
5. Beauty filters or retouching -- Phone cameras with automatic beauty mode enabled produce subtly smoothed skin that the biometric system flags. Disable all filters and shoot in standard photo mode.
6. Non-religious headwear -- Traditional headwear like gele (women) or fila (men) that is not worn for religious purposes will be rejected.
