Malaysia Passport Photo -- MyKad, Passport, and the Blue vs White Rule

Malaysia runs one of the most digitized identity systems in the world. The MyKad (Kad Pengenalan Malaysia) smart identity card, managed by Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN, National Registration Department), uses different photo specifications than the Malaysian passport, managed by Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia (JIM, Immigration Department). The critical difference that trips up most applicants: MyKad requires a blue background, while passports require white. Submitting the wrong background color is the fastest way to have your application sent back.

Both departments publish their requirements through the Immigration Department portal, and all passport applications since 2022 can be initiated through the MyOnline Passport (Pasport Online) system.

Exact Photo Requirements

Physical dimensions:

  • 35 x 50 mm (413 x 591 pixels at 300 DPI) -- note this is 5 mm taller than the ICAO standard 35x45mm
  • Head height: 25 to 35 mm from chin to crown
  • Face centered with approximately equal margins on left and right

Background rules by document:

  • Pasport Malaysia: white background, clean and uniform
  • MyKad / MyKid: blue background (medium blue, Pantone 2935 C or equivalent)
  • Visa applications to Malaysia: white background

Expression and pose:

  • Neutral expression, both eyes open, mouth closed
  • Face perfectly centered and straight -- even a 2-degree head tilt triggers rejection at JIM counters
  • Full face visible including both ears

Glasses:

  • Not permitted in any Malaysian passport or MyKad photo since 2017
  • This applies to all types -- prescription, reading, fashion frames
  • Contact lenses are fine as long as they do not alter eye color

Head coverings:

  • Tudung (hijab) is permitted for Muslim women -- this is a constitutional right in Malaysia
  • The tudung must not cast shadows on the face
  • Face must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the forehead
  • Non-religious head coverings (hats, caps, bandanas) are not allowed

Print quality:

  • Glossy photo paper only -- matte paper is not accepted
  • No visible pixelation, printer dots, or ink smearing
  • Must be a fresh print, not a photocopy or scan of a previous photo

Recency: Within the last 6 months. JIM officers compare the photo against your face at the counter and will request a new photo if there is a noticeable difference.

MyOnline Passport -- Digital Submission

Since 2022, Malaysian citizens can renew passports through the MyOnline Passport system without visiting a JIM office. The digital photo upload requirements:

  • Format: JPEG only
  • Minimum resolution: 413 x 591 pixels
  • File size: 100 KB to 5 MB
  • White background, no compression artifacts
  • The system runs automated face detection and will reject uploads where the head size, centering, or background do not meet parameters
  • After approval, you collect the printed passport from your selected JIM office or have it mailed

For first-time applications (including children), you must apply in person at a JIM office.

Where to Get Passport Photos in Malaysia

  • UTC (Urban Transformation Centre) -- Free or RM5-10 at photo counters inside UTC locations. UTCs in Kuala Lumpur (Pudu Sentral), Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu all have photo services alongside JIM satellite counters, making it a one-stop process. UTC staff know both blue (MyKad) and white (passport) background requirements.
  • Photo studios near JIM offices -- RM8-15 for a set of photos. Every JIM state office has nearby photo studios. The studios outside JIM Putrajaya (the headquarters) and JIM Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Duta Complex) handle the highest volume and are fastest.
  • Kedai gambar (traditional photo shops) -- RM10-20 in most neighborhoods. These are the small independent photo studios found in every Malaysian town. Quality varies -- ask to see a sample before paying.
  • MyDebit kiosk machines -- Some shopping malls have self-service photo kiosks (RM8-12) with passport photo mode. Quality is acceptable for MyKad but occasionally produces slightly off-white backgrounds that JIM rejects for passports.
  • Popular Bookstore / MPH -- Select branches offer printing services. Bring a digital file on USB and print 35x50mm photos for RM2-5.

Photographing Children and Infants for Malaysian Passports

Malaysian passports for children under 12 (pasport kanak-kanak) require the same 35x50mm white-background photos. JIM enforces the same technical standards regardless of age but makes practical concessions for very young children:

  • Under 1 year: Eyes may be partially closed. The child must be the only subject in the photo. A common technique is laying the baby on a white sheet and photographing from above.
  • Ages 1-4: Both eyes must be open. Mouth closed. No toys, pacifiers, or other objects visible. The child can sit in a car seat or booster covered with a white cloth.
  • All children: No parent or guardian may appear in the frame, even partially (no hands supporting the child). Head must be centered and upright.

JIM officers at the counter are accustomed to reviewing children's photos and apply requirements firmly but with understanding that infant photography is inherently difficult.

Common Rejection Reasons at JIM

Based on reported experiences from applicants at JIM offices nationwide:

  1. Wrong background color -- Blue photo submitted for passport (needs white) or white photo for MyKad (needs blue). This accounts for the largest share of rejections.
  2. Photo too old -- JIM officers compare photos against the applicant standing in front of them. Visible aging, new hairstyle, or weight changes prompt a request for fresh photos.
  3. Glasses worn -- Despite the ban being in effect since 2017, many applicants still arrive wearing glasses in their photos.
  4. Tudung shadow -- For women wearing tudung, the fabric can cast shadows across the cheeks or jawline. Studios use side lighting to eliminate this.
  5. 35x45mm photos submitted -- The standard international size does not work in Malaysia. Malaysian photos are 35x50mm. Photos printed at international chain pharmacies abroad are almost always the wrong size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does Malaysia use 35x50mm instead of the standard 35x45mm? A: Malaysia adopted the 35x50mm format for both MyKad and passports to accommodate the slightly taller photo window in Malaysian identity documents. The format has been consistent across MyKad generations since the smart card's introduction in 2001.

Q: I am overseas. Can I renew my Malaysian passport without visiting a JIM office? A: Malaysian citizens abroad can renew passports at Malaysian embassies and consulates. The MyOnline Passport system is currently for renewals within Malaysia only. Embassy processing typically takes 3-5 working days.

Q: What is the difference between MyKad and MyKid photos? A: Both use the same 35x50mm format with a blue background. MyKid is issued to Malaysian citizens under 12 years old. When the child turns 12, they must obtain a MyKad with a new photo.

Q: Can I take passport photos at the JIM office? A: JIM offices do not provide photo services. However, every JIM office has photo studios immediately outside, and UTC locations have photo counters inside the same building.

Q: How fast is Malaysian passport processing? A: Standard processing at JIM offices is 1-2 working days -- one of the fastest in the world. MyOnline Passport renewals take 3-5 working days plus mailing time. Expedited same-day service is available at JIM Putrajaya for an additional fee.
