High-quality photo paper. Face must be 27mm (+/- 2mm) from chin to top of head. Head centered in frame. Cut the photo to exactly 30 x 40 mm (1.2" x 1.6") — any deviation beyond 0.5 mm can trigger rejection.

A standard 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) print sheet holds 10 photos at this size — a cost-effective option at any photo kiosk or home printer. Leave a small margin between cuts.

The background must be light grey and completely uniform — any gradients, shadows, or patterns are grounds for rejection.

Japanese passport photos have strict face size requirements (27mm +/- 2mm from chin to crown). Many convenience stores (konbini) have ID photo machines that automatically comply with these standards.

Japan ID Card 30x40mm photos are typically submitted in person at a government office. Staff may photograph you on-site, but bringing a printed photo prepared to spec can speed up the process.
