The background must be White or light-coloured background only (off-white accepted) and completely uniform — any gradients, shadows, or patterns are grounds for rejection.

India uses a 35x45mm (3.5 x 4.5 cm) passport size photo — the standard ICAO rectangular format, also accepted by Passport Seva (Ministry of External Affairs online portal) with white/light background and face occupying 50-60% of the frame.
